A Joint Parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Bhutan attended the 2017 South Asian Speakers’ Summit on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at Indore, Madhya Pradesh (India) from 18-20 February 2017.
The delegation from the National Council was led by the Deputy Chairperson of the National Council, the Secretary General and an official. The Summit mainly aimed at follow-up on the conclusions of the first meeting of Speakers in Dakha, Bangladesh, in January 2016 and with the further intend to define opportunities and challenges faced by the parliaments in South Asia in exercising their role in the implementation of the SDGs. The Speakers also discussed on the achieving sustainable goals and release on Indore Declaration.
The Summit was jointly organized by the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Parliament of India. It was chaired by the Speaker of Lok Sabha, Smt. Sumitra Mahajan and co-chaired by Hon’ble President of IPU, Mr. Saber H. Chowdhury. The theme of the Summit this year was ‘Strengthening Regional Cooperation and resources for the SDGs’.
The speakers of Parliaments from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka and the Hon’ble President of IPU attended the Summit.
The Parliament of Sri Lanka will host the event in 2018.
