Successful Conclusion of the 136th IPU Assembly in Dhaka

Led by the Hon’ble Thrizin Dasho Dr. Sonam Kinga, the Bhutanese Delegation consisting of members from the National Council and National Assembly and Secretariats have been participating at the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) meetings at the Bangabondhu International Convention Center.

April 1st: Hon’ble Kesang Chuki Dorjee participated in the day long Forum of Women Parliamentarians. Discussions focused on Gender Sensitive Parliaments, Promoting enhanced international co-operation on the SDGs, in particular on the financial inclusion of women as a driver of development and lastly, the Debate on Women’s political participation: A new impetus to break the glass ceiling.

Later that night, all members of the delegation attended the spectacular Inaugural Ceremony of the 136th Assembly in the presence of Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

April 2nd: Hon’ble Pema Tenzin and Hon’ble Tshering participated in the Youth Parliamentarians’ Forum of Young Parliamentarians of the IPU. Members were invited to share the recent developments in youth participation in different countries.

At the General Debate on Redressing inequalities: Delivering on dignity and well-being for all, the Keynote address was made by Mr. Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Chairperson of the Global March Against Child Labour. He called on Parliamentarians to support the cause of ending child labour in their respective countries.

The Speakers of National Parliaments and Head of Delegations delivered their country and organization statements at the General Assembly on the conference theme. Bhutan’s country statement was made by the Hon’ble Thrizin on April 3rd.

Hon’ble Thrizin also participated in a Panel Discussion on Eradicating Poverty and Promoting Prosperity in a changing world sharing Bhutan’s perspective and efforts to eradicate poverty through a GNH lens.

Hon’ble Thrizin called on the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh, H.E. Sheikh Hasina on April 2nd. Hon’ble Thrizin thanked Her Excellency on the warm hospitality and said that Bhutan and Bangladesh enjoys a close relationship and friendship, 
and that our country looks forward to Her Excellency’s upcoming visit in the coming weeks.

The Bhutanese delegation led by the Hon’ble Thrizin called on the Hon’ble Speaker of Bangladesh’s parliament, Her Excellency Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. Hon’ble Thrizin congratulated and thanked Bangladesh’s Parliament in successfully hosting this 136th IPU meeting that brought in about 1,400 delegates from 132 parliaments worldwide.

In addition to this, the South Korean National Assembly Speaker Hon’ble Chung Sye-kyun called on Hon’ble Thrizin to acknowledge the close cooperation between the two countries and the potential formation of Bhutan – Korea Parliamentary friendship groups to further promote the close ties of friendship.
The Mexican delegation also called on the Bhutanese delegation briefly on April 3rd.

The Directors of the National Council and National Assembly also attended the Association of Secretary General of Parliaments meetings.

On the closing day of the Assembly, Hon’ble Thrizin presented the summary of the General Debate on Redressing Inequalities : Delivering on Dignity and Wellbeing for all which was one of the main outcomes of the Dhaka IPU.

The Inter Parliamentary Union meetings ended on April 5th with the adoption of the Dhaka Communiqué calling Parliamentarians across the globe to stress the necessity of enhancing transparency in politics, strengthen anti-corruption legislation, promoting human rights through appropriate laws and facilitate participation of especially women and youth in political processes.
