The Parliament of Bhutan to host the Asian Parliamentary Assembly on Standing Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs Committee

In the press conference held on 24th August 2017, Hon. Speaker of the National Assembly announced that the Parliament of Bhutan will host the APA Standing Committee meeting on Social and Cultural Affairs.

The three day meeting is scheduled from 31st August to 2nd September, 2017 at the Convention Center. As of now, 92 high level delegates from 20 countries have confirmed to participate in the event.

The Hon. Speaker expressed that hosting such a high level meeting would help participating countries exchange experiences and knowledge in terms of preserving and promoting cultures that unique to each country. He also said that Bhutan, with its uniquely rich culture and traditional values, has great potential to motivate and encourage member countries to cooperate and work closely towards safeguarding the scared cultures. The Hon. Speaker stated that the event will not only create a forum to witness and understand the cultural aspects of the participating country, but boost the business of the tourism industry as well.

The Assembly comprises of five Standing Committees and currently it has 42 member parliaments and 16 member parliaments as observers.

The Hon. Speaker of National Assembly, Jigme Zangpo is serving as the Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs.

From the Parliament of Bhutan, 12 members of the Social and Cultural Affairs Committees will form the Bhutanese delegation while rest of the Honourable MPs may participate as observers.
