56th Plenary

Posted on :19 February 2018

Presided over by the Chairperson, the Honorable members convened its 56th plenary in the Conference Hall today. The meeting was conducted with the sole purpose to commit to free and fair upcoming NC election and prepare for smooth transition into the third tenure of the National Council.

Being in the formative stage of democracy, the members agreed that it is very important for the current members who are re-contesting in the upcoming NC election to set high standards by upholding electoral laws and regulations. The plenary resolved to draft a code of conduct for the re-contesting members and it will be shared with the ECB as a commitment from the house to promote free and fair election.

The Members also discussed a draft agenda for the next session of the National Council, which will be conducted by the new National Council.

The NC secretariat also presented a draft orientation program for new members to facilitate smooth transition of NC into its third term. As a continuous house, the NC shall continue to follow up the pending issues with the government and will be preparing a report for the new house to deliberate.

The Hon. Chairperson reminded the house that it is incumbent on serving members to attend the plenary if duty calls and the re-contesting members must be prepared to return to Thimphu to attend such plenaries even in the midst of election as a continuous house.

The plenary concluded with a vote of thanks by the Chairperson, who also conveyed his best wishes to the re-contesting members for the upcoming election. After the plenary meeting, the members visited Simtokha Dzong to offer prayers and butter lamps.
