Posted on :05 September 2018

Today, the officials from the National Environment Commission Secretariat made a presentation to the Hon’ble Members on the Secretariat’s functioning and operation, and the status of policies relevant to protecting environment in Bhutan. The presentation covered the composition of National Environment Commission, the mandates and functions of the Secretariat. The presentation also included an overview of Bhutan’s membership to Multilateral Environment Agreements (MEAs) and regional cooperation such as Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Malé Declaration and many more which are dedicated towards strengthening environment protection.

The presentation highlighted the policies and initiatives that help protect the environment and also the challenges such as growing population and infrastructure, expansion of urban areas and pollution that impede environmental protection. It also highlighted some of the benefits of environment protection such as the receipt of international funding in the form of Green Climate Fund to incentivize the cause, and capacity building and technical assistance amongst others.

Officials from each of the different divisions under the Secretariat made presentations on the division’s specific roles and functions, plans and strategies towards protecting environment. The Hon’ble Members also sought clarification and responses from the relevant officials on their concerns.
