Opening ceremony of the 17th Session of the National Council of Bhutan

The opening ceremony of the 17th session of the National Council of Bhutan convened today at 10:00 a.m. with Zhugdrey Phuensum Tshogpa. In his opening remarks, the Chairperson expressed the significance of the Monkey Year. He said this year marks the birth of Guru Rimpoche, founding of the monarchy, birth of His Majesty the King and the birth of the Gyalsey Jigme Namgyal Wangchuck. Dasho Dr. Sonam Kinga also reported on the progress works of the various committees since the conclusion of the 16thsession. He said that the committees have conducted 75 meetings and 4 plenary sessions. Through those meetings, Committees have taken up important research and review assignments. The House also reviewed the responses of the government and agencies on the resolutions passed in the 16thSession. Issues on tourism policy and strategies as well as the hydropower development policy were also covered. Later, in the afternoon, NC conducted its first question hour session with the Prime Minister on the establishment of three new colleges in eastern Bhutan. Tomorrow, the House will continue to deliberate on the follow-up on the resolution of the 16th Session of the National Council
