Posted on :04 July 2016

Earlier today, the Chairperson of the National Council, Thrizin Dasho Dr. Sonam Kinga gave the vote of thanks after the Bangladesh President, H.E Md. Abdul Hamid's address to Parliament.

"Thank you Hon’ble Speaker,

On behalf of the Parliament of Bhutan, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to H.E. Mr. Md. Abdul Hamid, the Hon'ble President of Bangladesh for making a historic visit to Bhutan and addressing the joint-sitting of Parliament. It is historic for the following three reasons.

One, it is for the first time that a foreign head of state has addressed Bhutan's Parliament after the introduction of parliamentary democracy.

Two, the state visit by a President of Bangladesh takes place thirty years after the last state visit of a former President, H.E. Hussain Muhhamad Ershad in June, 1986.

Three, this is the third visit ever by a President of Bangladesh which has taken place at a time when Bhutan is celebrating three auspicious events:

i. the birth year of the Second Buddha known as Guru Padmasambhava,

ii. 400th anniversary of the arrival of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, who founded the Bhutanese polity, and,

iii. The Sacred 108th year of monarchy coinciding with the joyous birth of His
Royal Highness Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck.

We are honored to have His Excellency, a distinguished leader and freedom fighter of Bangladesh, address this joint-sitting. His Excellency was the former Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Jatiyo Sangsad, as well as a parliamentarian for eight terms. He was a parliamentarian long before many of us were even born. Thus, we remain confident that our bilateral relationship as well as parliamentary collaboration will be further strengthened with the leadership and inspiration he provides.

We would like to thank His Excellency for kindly noting with admiration the democratic transition initiated in historically unprecedented ways by His Majesty the Fourth King. We are indeed marching ahead as we consolidate our democracy under the guidance of His Majesty the King in order to realize the vision of creating a just and harmonious society."
