National Resources and Environment Committee holds consultation meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forest

22nd July 2016: The Members of the National Council led by the National Resources and Environment Committee held a consultation meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forest at Jambayang Resort on Friday.

Speaking to the participants from the Ministry led by the Officiating Secretary, the Chairperson of the Committee Hon'ble Jigmi Rinzin said that the meeting and presentations were sought as a part of review of the agriculture policy. The presentations were made by three Departments of the Ministry.

The Departments of Agriculture Marketing and Cooperatives highlighted current plans, programs and strategies to encourage farmers move beyond subsistence farming. The Department of Agriculture highlighted the target and result to achieve food security and self-sufficiency. The Department of Livestock reported that there is sufficient production of eggs in the market and self-sufficiency in dairy products will be achieved very soon.

Why there is a sluggish growth in agriculture sector? How to make this sector attractive to youth? How to make agriculture sector more commercially viable are some of the questions that the committee is trying to answer in carrying out its review of agriculture policy in the country. 
The meeting adjourned at 7 pm after a question and answer session.
