Thematic Session on Sustainable Developments Goals

The third day of the thematic session for the newly-elected and the eminent members of the National Council was conducted with the representative from the UN agencies with the aim to familiarize them with the functions and roles of the UN agencies in realizing the Sustainable Developments Goals and its agenda.

Representative from various UN agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Development Programme(UNDP), United Nations Population Fund(UNFPA), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), UN Women, World Food Programme(WFP), and the World Health Organization(WHO) made a presentation covered various aspects on the implementation and achievements of the SDG’s agenda by 2030.

Cordially welcoming all the participants in the thematic session, the Honorable Chairperson said that the main objective of conducting the session to create a platform to enrich the knowledge and bring uniformity in the understanding of the system both at national and international level since honorable members comes from different professional background. He also expressed his gratitude for supporting the Parliament through partnership, technical and financial assistance.

Congratulating the Honorable members, Mr. Gerald Daly, Resident Coordinator of UN in his introductory remarks said that UN has witnessed the rapid pace of development of the Parliament guided by the wisdom and leadership of His Majesty the King. He also briefed on the different subject matter that will be presented to the members through short videos and presentations slides.

Subsequently, Ms. Niamh Collier Smith, Deputy Resident Representative reported on 17 SDG goals and majors programs targeted towards realizing these goals in collaboration and support by UNDP. She also provided a brief on the achievements on the millennium Development Goals and projected the tasks that need to be accomplish the Gross National Happiness and SDG goals.

The other topic of the presentations covered on the UNDP’s support to the RGoB in achieving good Governance pillar of Gross National Happiness, and how to consider SDG 16 on peace, justice, sustainable Development Goal; SDG 13 on Climatic action with an objective to build resilience to the impacts of climate change; Community solution on climate change and disaster; Empowering women and children to achieve SDGs; Roles of parliamentarians in implementing and achieving the SDGs; and emergency preparedness and responses during disasters as practiced internationally.

The presenters were Ms. Sangay Wangmo, Portfolio Manager, Inclusive Governance of UNDP, Mr. Chimi Rinzin, Portfolio Manager, Climate Adaption and Disaster Management from UNDP, Mr. Tshering Penjore, Project Officer, Climate Adaptation and Disaster from UNDP; Mr. Rudolf Schwenk, UNICEF deputy Resident Representative, Ms. Beate Dastel and Deki Dema, Child Protection Officer UNICEF, Ms.Tshering Chuki, National Specialist-Communications from RCO; and Mr. Piet Vochten, Head of Office, WFP.

Highlighting some key points, Honorable Kesang Chuki Dorjiee expressed a heartfelt gratitude for the extensive presentation by the UN agencies.
