Presentation on Outbreak of Health Care Associated Infections

With the aim to understand the reason behind the recent outbreak of Health Care Associated Infections at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH), the NC members had a half-day discussion with the President and concerned officials from JDWNRH. The discussion will also help the members to clarify about the events that took place if questioned during their constituency visits by the general public .

Heartily welcoming the President and officials from JDWNRH, the Chairperson of National Council clarified that NC's intervention on the issue was mainly to get an understanding of the real event that took place & to render all necessary support to address the issues faced by the JDWNRH so that such outbreaks do not take place in the near future.

A very detailed presentation on the outbreak of Health Care Associated Infections (HAI) at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit from 23th July- 6th August, 2018 was presented by the JDWNRH highlighting the background of the causes & factors for the HAI. The investigation that was carried out following the event & measures taken to avoid future incidents.

It was reported that there has been 9 deaths out of the 24 cases related to HAI between 23rd July and 9th August 2018. The possible cause for the outbreak was found to be contaminated hospital water supply which was used for cleaning the units, washing hands, feeding materials and other equipments.

Discussion also focused on the constraints and challenges faced by the JDWNRH such as need for proper human management system, financial and procurement related issues, lack of proper equipments, lack of proper space for patients, issues related to visitors, need for specialized doctors at the hospital etc so as to prevent such incidents in the near future.

The discussion concluded with question and answer session.
