GGC continues meeting relevant stakeholders

The Good Governance Committee met with officials from Bhutan Infocomm & Media Authority (BICMA)  and the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA) this morning to continue its consultative meeting with relevant stakeholders to discuss on the harmful use of alcohol in our society. The meeting commenced with  welcome remarks by the GGC Chair. She informed the officials that the committee has been mandated to look into this issue by the house.

BICMA’s presentation outlined the regulatory tools in prohibition and promotion of alcohol beverages, brief overview of BICMA’s mandate, implementation status and revision of BICMA Act 2006. BICMA went onto update the committee on the activities they have carried out to enforce prohibition of advertisement & promotion of alcohol beverages in print and broadcast media.  They said, restricting entry of minors into entertainment venues especially drayangs and discotheques was one of them.

After the presentation by BICMA, MOEA presented on their progress report on the implementation status of National Alcohol Policy 2015-2020. MOEA highlighted the various control measures the Ministry has undertaken on the issuance and operation of bar licenses to curtail alcohol consumption and their way forward to look into this issue.

The meeting concluded with Q & A, most of which was mainly based on bar license policies, issuance of licenses to entertainment centres, measures to monitor the illegal sale of alcohol in the country etc.
