Hon’ble Chairperson at Vesak 2019

At the invitation of the Vietnamese Government, the Chairperson accompanied by a Member and officials from the National Council of Bhutan, representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, performers from the Royal Academy of Performing Arts and monks from the Central Monastic Body are attending the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak Celebrations 2019 at the Tam Chuc International Buddhist Convention Centre in Ha Nam Province of Vietnam. Vesak Day has been celebrated by Buddhists for the last two thousand years as a sacred event to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and passing of the Great Buddha. The Celebrations will be held over a period of three days from 12-14 May 2019.

The Theme of 2019 Celebrations is “Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Sustainable Societies”. The Celebration is being attended by about 1,500 foreign delegates and 15,000 local delegates.

At the opening ceremony held on 12th May, the Buddhist Leaders, Sangha Members, Heads of State, Foreign Dignitaries, Ambassadors and Delegates paid Homage to the Three Jewels.

Amongst others, the Celebration is attended by the President of Myanmar, Prime Minister of Nepal and Vice President of India along with the Prime Minister of Vietnam.

The Hon’ble Chairperson will deliver his official statement at the Celebrations on 14th May 2019.
