SCAC resumes review of Situation of Human Trafficking in Bhutan

Posted on :02 September 2019

Following the 23rd Session of the National Council, the Social and Cultural Affairs Committee (SCAC) resumed the review of situation of human trafficking in Bhutan.

In the month of August, the SCAC met with the members of Hotels and Restaurant Association of Bhutan, officials of the Tourism Council of Bhutan and the members of the Guides Association of Bhutan.

Similarly, the Committee also carried out field visits from August 19th – 27th, to Samdrup Jongkhar, Nganglam, Sarpang and Gelephu to meet with Dzongkhag Officials, Local
Government leaders, Royal Bhutan Police and officials from the regional offices of Immigration, Labour and Trade.

Increased demand for labour for domestic help and construction projects, coupled with high unemployment and lack of awareness amongst stakeholders and public
alike were pointed as some of the contributing factors to the situation of human trafficking in Bhutan.

With the growing social problems from Drayangs and other entertainment centers like discotheques and karaoke bars, stakeholders also expressed concern on the proliferation of such entertainment centers.

The Committee will continue their stakeholder consultations and present a thorough report on the issue of human trafficking during the 24th Session of the House.
