The Economic Affairs Committee of National Council met with the team from Department of Revenue and Customs, Ministry of Finance to discuss on the issue related to Vehicle Import in the country.

At the outset the team presented on Tax Policy on Vehicle imports since 2002. The major tax reform on vehicle import was done in the year 2011 with the enactment of Tax Act 2011. Customs duty on import of light vehicle is imposed on the basis of its engine capacity.

Since the import of light vehicles outnumbered the other types of vehicle, imposition of customs duty, sales tax and green tax on light vehicle were further increased during the enactment of Tax Act 2014.

The trend on number of vehicles imported kept increasing over the years despite having measures put in place to curtail the import.

As per the Bhutan Trade Classification those vehicles imported in the country are classified into four categories.
