Joint Committee for the Penal Code (Amendment) Bill of Bhutan 2019 holds its first meeting

The members of the Joint Committee of the Parliament for  Penal Code (Amendment) Bill of Bhutan 2019 met for the first time on 7 October 2020. The Committee was formed to review the disputed clauses between the two Houses of Parliament.

The first meeting saw the Committee unanimously electing Hon’ble Member Ugyen Namgay from the National Council as the Chairperson and Hon’ble Member Ugyen Wangdi from the National Assembly as the Deputy Chairperson. 

The Committee Comprises of five members from the National Council and seven members from the National Assembly. 

Of the 56 amendment sections of the bill, the two Houses could not come into agreement on 27 sections in its last deliberations on the Bill.

The exhaustive discussion on the disputed sections will begin from its next meeting.
