The Social and Cultural Affairs Committee visits Dechencholing and Changangkha Schools in Thimphu.

Recognizing that young boys and girls are most vulnerable to the issue of suicide and mental health, SCAC visited Dechencholing Higher Secondary School in the afternoon yesterday and Changangkha Middle Secondary School earlier today to understand the situation in the schools.

School Counsellor from Dechencholing shared that family issues such as divorce, alcoholic parents and lack of conducive home environment were recorded as the leading cause of mental health in the School. “Healing Hand” and adoption of children by the teachers are some of the school’s initiatives to help students in difficult circumstances and also contribute to curbing mental health issues.

Similarly, the Counselor at Changangkha said she handled 220 cases from 2019 till date. “The GIVE Club” which stands for Get Involved and Value Each other supports students in difficult circumstances while also trying to instill values in them.

The committee also met with student representatives from both the schools where they raised academic pressures, family issues, relationship issues and substance abuse as the leading causes contributing to mental health.

The committee visited 4 schools and a college so far and plans to visit few more schools and colleges in the following weeks to study and understand the situation better.
