The Social and Cultural Affairs Committee visited Paro Dzongkhag Administration in the morning yesterday to discuss suicide and mental health issues with  the relevant officials there.

Paro Dzongkhag currently has 29 schools for which there are 12 counselors.  There is a Psychosocial Support group comprising of 12 counselors to execute psychosocial plans and programs. Family issues and relationship issues were the main causes of mental health and suicide attempts based on the cases dealt by the RBP, school counselors and RENEW focal.

This year the Paro RBP recorded 2 suicides and 13 attempted suicides. Likewise, the RENEW focal received 30 distress calls from the community from January to June this year.

In the afternoon, the Committee visited Paro College of Education (PCE) and conducted a meeting with relevant academic staff and students.

The PCE is currently coordinating a project called Happiness and Well-Being funded by the European Union. Happiness and Well Being centers have been established in all the nine colleges of the Royal University of Bhutan to promote mental health, counselling and well-being support for students. PCE has 8 counsellors and an optional module on counselling that is offered to interested students in their final year.

Paro is the 4th dzongkhag that the Committee has visited. Tomorrow, SCAC travels to Chukha Dzongkhag.
