Social and Cultural Affairs Committee visits Ugyen Academy and Phuntshothang Higher Secondary School in Punakha. 

The Social and Cultural Affairs Committee visited Ugyen Academy and Phuntshothang Higher Secondary School yesterday to discuss Suicide and Mental Health issues.
 
At the Ugyen Academy, the Committee conducted an extensive interactive session with Principal, Chief Dzongkhag Education Officer, Vice Principal, 11 relevant teachers and 79 students. The discussion revolved around  root causes of mental health issues such as family issues, parent-children relationship, substance abuse, online games and cyberbully among others. Responsible Thinking Room, Young Girl’s Circle and Peer Mediators are some of the school’s  best initiatives through which they try to resolve mental health issues. In addition, the School  has 2 teacher counselors .
 
Similarly the Committee met with the relevant teachers, counselors and student representatives of the Phuntshothang Higher Secondary School in the afternoon. The school currently houses students relocated from three schools in Phuntsholing.  Following the discussion, Hon’ble Members of the Committee visited some of the classrooms to listen and share  views and expectations of the students. Although new location and new environment to many, the teachers and students are making their best effort to adjust and adapt to the new surroundings.
