EAC Consults with HAB

On 7th Jan, 2025, the Economic Affairs Committee of the National Council convened a meeting with Handicraft Association of Bhutan (HAB).

The committee discussed the challenges and opportunities within Bhutan's handicraft sector, as it being a crucial part of the country’s tourism industry.

HAB highlighted its role in preserving Bhutan’s cultural heritage, supporting over 7,500 artisans, 70% of whom are women. With 185 shops and 190 production houses across key tourist hubs, HAB ensures the availability of authentic crafts while facing hurdles like regulatory barriers, limited resources, and competition from imported products. Proposed solutions include introducing a "Certificate of Origin," improving infrastructure, and fostering rural development through community-based tourism.

The committee raised questions on boosting the economy, reducing intermediaries, and enhancing financial accessibility for artisans. HAB responded by emphasizing the need for government support, streamlined export systems, and collaboration with international markets. It also proposed licensing reforms and policy inclusivity to strengthen the sector.

Despite challenges, HAB remains committed to empowering artisans, expanding markets, and safeguarding Bhutan's rich cultural legacy.
